MISSIONS / MISIONES

WWH2H is deeply and profoundly grateful to the many mission teams that have constructed buildings, provided medical/dental clinics, taught Vacation Bible School, and have done so much more to support the Children's Village and the local community. We could not do this without you and your heart for Jesus and the children.

November 2007 - Summit Valley Church Construction Team

Where to begin...want to share the wonderful events of the recent CCC Team to Honduras from Addy, Washington.

  • Went to church where our Village Children serenaded us with choruses in English and Spanish. Angels!!! Walked the property we are considering to purchase for the WWH2H church/community center project. It has two partially completed large buildings, one small, and lots of room. We will see what God has in mind.
  • Mary got to drive our new 72-passenger bus to Tegucigalpita one day (about 6 blocks from the Village) to pick up supplies. Oscar rode by the door, helping me miss the dogs, children, and other vehicles who dared to be on the road at the time. With the exception of a stroller left a bit too far out on the road, I managed to miss the obstacles and only slightly nicked the stroller.
  • I love how each child picks out one or two of our volunteers to bond with. Daniel took charge of Jim Culverwell that first day and pretty much stuck to him like glue the rest of the week, while he and wife Tammy helped electrify the place. Daniel seemed to have a mission in mind, and whether he realized it or not, he so touched Jim, that a miraculous transformation happened in Jim's life and he told me at week's end, he would never be the same.
  • One of my favorite memories is watching our men walking back to the project each day across the back field with 6 or 7 little boys charging after them, grabbing hands, jumping on backs to be part of the crew.
  • Guy "Chico" Bumstead, Mary and Lyle's son, commandeered Alexander to be his second in command and together they dug the "Chico River", strung electrical wires and hung doors. Adonis and Nelson were never far from the action, helping, playing with the leftover boards and pole-vaulting through the ever-present mud marshes. Ted and Cindi Birklid and John Carlson mudded the whole place. I found a tiny handprint in one of their "finished" walls left by one of their "helpers." On the first day, chief electrician Ben Campbell was spared electrocution by the grace of God--just one of the many miracles of the week. Plumber Jim Beaston spent most of the week up to his kneecaps in mud, hooking troublesome pipes together to bring water to the home. Right alongside our volunteers were Fredy and his Honduran crew running to keep up with these "crazy" folks from Washington who put so much hustle, they were a blur.
  • Back at the Main Building, Mary Hopkins kept the kitchen staff in stitches as she taught them how to make several dishes and her famous rolls. They taught her how to make tortillas and other things, all the while with so much laughter and giggling as they all struggled to understand each other. Megan and Natalia Carlson filled in everywhere. Upstairs they helped wrap well over 300 presents for Christmas, downstairs they helped with the cooking and serving, outside they played and cuddled the little children (certainly their favorite part), and at the building site they did whatever anyone needed them to do.
  • Monday, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner for everyone. The power was out, making it a real adventure. The kids loved it, especially the pie for dessert!!
  • Tuesday was Decorate-for-Christmas Day. Most of the kids got to help, each putting his/her own ornament on the tree and then posing in front of the tree and the nativity scene for pictures.
  • Thursday was party day with presents for all the November birthdays and small gifts for all the other children and our staff, brought by the Addy team. The look on Yoselyn's face as she cradled her first baby doll and climbed into Guy's lap, was priceless!
  • And then it was over...way too soon... with the usual tears, hugs, last minute pictures, "just one more pleeeaassse" we left to do a bit of shopping in Puerto Cortes
  • and we were on our way back home arriving at SEATAC to a rare Seattle snowstorm, exhausted, blessed and making plans to return next year. Thank you all for your prayers for us while we were gone.

October 2007 - Immanuel Lutheran Construction Team

A mission team from Immanuel worked at Children’s Village from October 19 to November 2. With the foundation and wall structures already completed by local labor and other mission teams, it was the Immanuel team’s responsibility to build a roof for the new Girls’ Home. In the months prior to the trip, the team raised more than $3,000 to purchase steel beams and roofing supplies.

Men from the team worked 10 to 12-hour days cutting and welding steel beams into 35’ half trusses, welding the lateral members into place and installing the metal roofing. The team also built a shelter for the bus. Women on the team took care of cooking, cleaning and doing laundry for the group; some building site cleaning; painting trusses; handywoman repairs; sorting a roomful of Christmas presents; reorganizing the medical supply closet; and sorting and distributing donated clothing. At the end of the day, team members relaxed by playing games, singing, tickling, and cuddling with kids. We had a great time!

The Drama team visit was amazing. It consisted of WWH2H board members, students from the Drama Team from Damascus Christian School in Damascus, Oregon, and a wonderful family that has been to other parts of Honduras in the past on mission trips. The two main goals of this group were interaction and teaching the children, and evangelism.

The Drama team separated the children into Bigs and Littles. With the small children they played games that taught acting skills. The older children learned even more indepth skills in drama and acting, as well as some magic tricks to use for evangelism. Colleen Atherton held volleyball lessons in the mornings. Her dad, John taught the older boys valuable skills in using skits and magic tricks as a means of evangelizing their friends.

All of this wonderful training laid a foundation. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we took the skits and magic tricks to three local schools and presented them to over 600 children, strongly proclaiming the message of the Gospel. Many children prayed the prayer of salvation at these programs. We also held a special youth service on Friday night at our WWH2H Church in Puerto Cortes, where two people gave their lives to the Lord. This is all due to the humble service and faithful prayer and fasting that many in Honduras and the U.S. participated in prior to the trip.

On Sunday, we held a baptismal service. Four members of the WWH2H Church were baptized. Thirteen-year-old Alex, one of the children living at the Village, was one of them. The widow of the deceased pastor (of the church our Board used to attend) was given donated funds to replace the beds and refrigerator she had sold to pay the school costs for her two children. She was overcome with gratitude. What can we say to all of you who came on this team? Sacrificing your time, funds and prayers to bless the children and people of Honduras. "Thank you" just doesn't seem to be enough.
