History

1998

  • Hurricane Mitch hits and devastates Honduras leaving nearly 7000 dead, 1.5 million homeless and many children orphaned and unprotected

1999

  • Oscar Serrano, a native of Honduras and his wife Amy go to Honduras to receive a medical container that they and some friends had put together.
  • While delivering aide they met a pastor caring for 18 boys in an orphanage in La Pita. At the pastor’s request the decision was made to help raise support for them. Money and teams were sent but in the end funds were misused, everything was stolen and the boys went back to the streets.

2000

  • Oscar Serrano, Lyle and Mary Frenter and then president of WWH2H, Pastor Roy Henson and his wife Linda went to Honduras to look for property to build their own Children’s Home.
  • After running into many dead ends, they were introduced to Salomon Lopez. The night before, Salomon had dreamed they were coming and in the dream, God told him to help them. That morning Salomon gave them 8 acres of land in Tegucigalpita that today is the WWH2H Children’s Village and home to 76 children.
  • Funds are raised to begin construction.

2001

  • Funds continue to be raised and teams sent to build a little at a time.

2002

  • One of the original boys from the La Pita orphanage, Edgar, comes to the construction site to ask “When is my home going to be ready?” Steve Sharp vows to go back home and raise the funds needed to finish the home. He said he was not going back to Honduras until he could finish the home and would not come back to the US until Edgar was tucked into his bed.

2003

  • Pastor Henson resigns and Mary Frenter is elected President.
  • Oscar and Amy Serrano move to Honduras to live full time as our National Directors so the work can go forward faster.
  • Shortly after they arrive, Edgar is electrocuted as he climbs out of a store vent where he had slept that night. The decision is made to open the home even though construction is not yet complete.
  • The Meals from the Heart feeding program opens in Puerto Cortes where they meet five boys living together under a bridge. These boys become the first residents at The Children’s Village.
  • Mercy Ships International begins a long time friendship with WWH2H sending construction teams.

2004

  • Medical, construction and Vacation Bible School teams arrive for the first time
  • The main complex is completed with four living quarters, kitchen, dining room and offices.
  • Five more children are added to our family.

2005

  • Four more children come to live at The Children’s Village including our first girl.

2006

  • Technical school is built at The Children’s Village campus.
  • Heart to Heart Church is started in Puerto Cortes. Each Sunday our children attend church here.
  • 11 more children come to live at The Children’s Village bringing the total to 25 children.

2007

  • Samaritan’s Purse donates money to begin construction on baby/toddler and girls houses.
  • A toddler/nursery house is opened in a small building on campus.
  • Our family grows to 57 children.

2008

  • Baby/toddler and girls houses are completed.
  • Ten acres is given to WWH2H in the mountains of Santa Barbara to build another Children’s Village
  • Property is purchased and the Heart to Heart Church is built.
  • Our first Village wedding happens as son, Josue marries Cesia. They met at the Heart to Heart Church.
  • Our family grows to 66 children.

2009

  • Beauty School opens at The Children’s Village under the tutelage of Cesia Lopez.
  • A-dec donates a complete dental suite for our future medical/dental clinic.
  • Our family grows to 73 children.

2010

  • The Medical/Dental Clinic is completed at our Puerto Cortes campus. The clinic will supply care for our children and for the local community. Free care will be provided for the poor.
  • Currently, we have 76 children.
